1 Page Data Analysis

Prompt

Perform a data assessment on the Milestone One Data. In order to perform a complete data assessment, you must complete each of the following:

  • First Impressions: Look at the Excel file and discuss the following: What kind of information do you think this data set contains? Identify the different column headers. Based on what you see, make your best approximation about the type of information included in this data set.
  • Mean, Minimum, and Maximum: Choose two different columns and calculate the mean, minimum, and maximum of each of the columns. Record your column selections and your results. Calculate the mean, minimum, and maximum of the corresponding columns in the other tab (for example, if you calculate using the Firefighter tab first, move to the Police tab next and do the calculation on the column with the same header).
  • Findings: Now that you have completed the above, discuss the findings from your data assessment. For example, discuss why you chose to look into certain columns or rows and what the answers have revealed about the potential of the information housed in the data. Consider what questions arose as you were looking at the data.
  • Next Steps: Describe what you plan to do to further analyze the data. For example, how might you reorganize the data, or what columns and rows are you particularly interested in analyzing further? Be sure to explain your rationale.

Tip: When choosing columns to perform these calculations, consider which columns are most interesting to you. For example, would you like to compare salaries or benefits? Both?
