Instructions:

· Choose and
sign up for one major religion-related artwork to do your project on:

· This is also an individual project.

· Write an essay introducing the artwork you selected. Please include the following information:

· An attached photo of your selected artwork

· 1st Paragraph: What is your definition of art and what is the purpose of art? Have you ever been to an art museum before? Why or why not? Are art museums important? If so, why?

· 2nd Paragraph: Introduce the artwork you selected and why you selected it. Provide background information on the artist and the artwork itself.

· 3rd Paragraph: Make at least two distinct & descriptive connections between the artwork and the major religion it directly relates to. You can do this through highlighting any major tenets or cultural aspects of the major religion and connecting them to aspects of the artwork you selected. This will demonstrate your knowledge of the religion and will provide the context in which you will discuss the details for the meaning/interpretation of the artwork it relates to.

· Ex: Last Supper (artwork) – major religion (Christianity)

· 4th Paragraph: Describe your own personal impression and interpretation of the artwork.
Comment on as many details as you can from the art piece and attribute your own meaning them.

· 5th Paragraph: Write
your own original creative piece based on or inspired by the selected artwork, which can include, but is not limited to a fictional narrative, poetry, song or rap lyrics. This is your individual opportunity to create your own artistic work! (no haikus; the more writing/details you provide, the better!)

Note: This creative piece must be at least five sentences/five lines long. The more detailed and descriptive, the higher you will score.

Part Two: Content Paper

Instructions:

Note: DO NOT use external/non-course related sources in your paper. You want to stick with our class materials exclusively, but use your own words to synthesize what you have learned and demonstrate your comprehension of it.

• 1st Paragraph (at least 10 sentences)

– Summarize what you have learned about
two of the following four major religions listed here:

Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam & Judaism only (Christianity NOT included)
(core beliefs, important gods or people, events, background/timeline, culture, etc.)

• 2nd Paragraph (at least 10 sentences)

– Part One: Discuss the major similarities and differences between the two religions (at least three similarities and three differences)

– Part Two: How would you define religion after taking this course? How has what you have learned in this course informed your understanding of religion and global culture academically, intellectually, and personally?
