NURS 450: Public/Community Health Experiential Nursing Learning Course

Assignment: Post Experience Reflections

40 points

Assignment: The post experience reflections will be a way for the student to communicate their experiential learning experiences with the faculty. It gives the student a way to reflect upon their learning after the experience has occurred. This is supported by Chris Tanner’s reflection on learning model. These reflections are about the student. Each reflection is due in the D2L assignment dropbox after each experience but no later than the due date on the D2L course calendar.

Outcomes: This assignment helps to meet the following student learning outcomes and end of program student learning outcomes.

SLO: #6 Evaluate lifelong learning, informatics/technology, and research evidence to promote population health and nursing actions to guide health promotion, prevention, maintenance, and restoration activities.

SLO: #7 Function as a nurse leader and change agent using the Scope and Standards of Public Health Nursing to advocate for policy changes that promote population-based health.

EOPSLO: #1 Build the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the baccalaureate prepared nurse as described within the Scope and Standards of Practice and Nursing Code of Ethics.

Directions:

Following each experiential learning experience (24 hours in community based clinical site and 11 volunteer hours), the student will write a reflection on their experiences. The reflection will follow the template provided. There should be 4 reflections submitted; 3 after each clinical experience and 1 for the volunteer experience. It is advisable for the student to submit these within 2 days post experience. Because experiences happen at different times throughout the semester, a set due date is not possible. However, all entries must be completed by the due date posted in the course calendar.

Grading: Grading will be based on the completeness of the reflection, including all information listed in the template. See rubric for more details.

Template:

Each reflection must include:

· Date of experience

· Location of experience

· Activity/ies involved

· New skill learned (if any)

· How the student grew in their knowledge, skills and attitudes as a professional nurse

· Any other anecdote, personal reflection
