A literature review is an objective, critical summary of published research literature relevant to a

topic under consideration for research. Its purpose is to create familiarity with current thinking and research on

a particular topic and may justify future research into a previously overlooked or understudied area.

****A literature review is more than just a summary of each article. It involves critically appraising the two articles and finding common themes, topics, etc. about the sentinel event. As you find those common themes among the two articles, then discuss those in the literature review. ****

Here’s a quick overview of how to identify research articles:

A scholarly, research article is written by the scientist(s) who actually did the research WITHIN the last five years (unless it was a historic study). If a resource is greater than 5 years from publication, a discussion with faculty is necessary.

The article follows a specific format

A systematic review searches for the answer to a particular question in the existing scientific literature on a topic.

A meta-analysis compares and combines the findings of previously published studies, usually to assess the effectiveness of an intervention or mode of treatment.

Below are links to an article and PowerPoint from 2021 discussing Sentinel Events.

Select one Sentinel Event that has occurred in the last five years and locate two scholarly journal articles related to this type of event. Submit a literature review paper in APA format (see article “How to Write a Literature Review Paper” Preview the document Download “How to Write a Literature Review Paper”) and submit a PDF copy of both scholarly articles that were used for this review, along with your paper under the submission link. Please review the grading rubric for specific requirements.

NOTE***This is not a paper regarding a sentinel event. This is a paper critically appraising the research articles you chose about the type of sentinel event. Discuss the research articles, not the event.
