1-1 Discussion: History in Media (50 points

Welcome to HIS 262! In this first discussion, introduce yourself to the class by sharing a bit about yourself. You might include things like your preferred name and pronouns, your hobbies, where you are from, your major, or whatever you are comfortable sharing.

Historical events are often the subject of media like movies, television, or books. For many of us, what we know about history we learned from these media types. But what do we really know? What do these media forms tell us about what happened in the past and to whom? For this discussion, you will choose an example of a media type, such as a movie, TV show, book, or graphic novel about a historical event or a historical person, and then address the following discussion prompts.

Remember to remain thoughtful and respectful toward your peers and instructor in your initial and response discussion posts.

Create one initial post and respond to posts by at least two peers.

For your initial post, address the following:

  • First, introduce yourself to the class by sharing a bit about yourself, such as your preferred name or pronouns, where you live or where you are from, and your major or your career plans.
  • Next, identify at least two specific examples of how the time period for the historical event is represented in the media type you chose (movie, TV show, book, graphic novel, etc.).
  • Whose perspective of the historical event is portrayed?
  • Describe how this perspective shapes the story of the historical event.

For your response posts to at least two peers, address the following for the example of a media type provided by your peer:

  • Why do you think this historical time period was the subject of this example?
  • What other perspectives would represent a different story than what is depicted in the example?
  • What does the example tell you about issues that matter to society today?

Remember, your contributions to the discussion play an important part in building the classroom learning community. This assignment is graded on the quality of your initial post and at least two response posts to your classmates.

Brightspace allows the addition of video notes in discussion posts. You may use the Video Note tool to complete this assignment. Written posts are equally acceptable. If you use Video Note, your video should be 2-5 minutes long. If you need assistance using Video Note, please refer to the resources in the Start Here module.
