After reading Health Canada’s information on food safety, two recommendations that jumped out to me were the significance of keeping raw meat separate from other foods and the requirement of using appropriate handwashing techniques.

First, it was unexpected to learn that the best way to prevent cross-contamination is to store raw meat apart from other items. In order to keep juices from contaminating other foods, Health Canada recommends that raw meat be kept in a separate container and maintained on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator (Health et al.). I had not completely understood the possible risk of cross-contamination until this advice was mentioned. To reduce this risk, I will now ensure that raw meat is always kept in leak-proof containers and in a specific part of my refrigerator at home. I will also use different cutting boards for raw meat and other food products to reduce cross-contamination.

Second, it opened my eyes to how important it is to wash your hands properly. In particular, before handling food and after handling raw meat or poultry, Health Canada emphasizes the importance of washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (Health et al.). Although I washed my hands often, I may not have done it thoroughly or correctly. In response, I will set a timer to ensure I wash my hands for the whole 20 seconds and tell everyone in my family how important it is to wash their hands well. The purpose of this modification is to lessen the possibility of germs and viruses spreading and causing foodborne diseases.

To sum up, lowering the risk of foodborne illnesses requires implementing efficient food safety procedures at home. My culinary procedures could use some adjustment, as emphasized by Health Canada’s recommendations on keeping raw meat separate from other foods and stressing the importance of washing your hands properly. I want to improve food safety and shield my family from health hazards by putting these changes into practice, such as storing raw meat on different cutting boards and utilizing separate storage for it, as well as washing your hands thoroughly. These procedures help to create a healthier and more hygienic home environment in addition to being in line with advised food safety guidelines.
