Critical Thinking Assignment: Create an Annotated Bibliography

This Critical Thinking assignment builds on the assignment from Module 4.

Create an Annotated Bibliography, writing a two-to-three-paragraph appraisal of each article from the 10 references you gathered for the Module 4 Critical Thinking Assignment.

There should be a title page and then these sources should be listed according to APA 7th edition guidelines excluding the reference page. Each individual annotation should be followed by the corresponding appraisal. Look for relevant literature on a topic of interest to you paying attention to the methods of collecting and analyzing data and ethical research practices.

This is an opportunity to practice synthesizing the author’s words. Do not use quotes; Rather, put the author’s ideas into your own words. Take as many pages as needed to provide summaries for each of your articles.

Non-communicable Diseases: An Overview

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which are becoming the world’s top causes of
mortality and placing a rising strain on healthcare systems, particularly in low- and middleincome nations, include cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory conditions, and cardiovascular
illnesses. These illnesses are usually long-term and cause a considerable amount of morbidity
and mortality as they worsen. Because of their high frequency and correlation with lifestyle
variables, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have become a pressing public health concern.
The worldwide relevance of this subject and the pressing need for creative approaches to NCD
management and prevention drew me in. Furthermore, to effectively treat patients, a future
healthcare professional must comprehend NCDs’ underlying processes, risk factors, and
preventative strategies.

The first selected article, Budreviciute et al. (2020), focuses on NCDs’ management and
prevention strategies and their risk factors. This comprehensive review highlights the importance
of lifestyle interventions and public health strategies to mitigate the rising incidence of NCDs. It
is a foundational piece in understanding global approaches to combat these diseases. The article
also discusses the challenges and opportunities in addressing NCDs, especially in regions like the
Middle East, where healthcare systems are evolving. This article provides a broad context for my
exploration of NCDs and offers insights into prevention methodologies.

Nikoloski et al. (2021) explore the intersection of the COVID-19 pandemic and NCDs,
emphasizing how the pandemic has exacerbated the burden of chronic diseases. The systematic
review links the two public health crises, showing how individuals with pre-existing NCDs are
more vulnerable to severe outcomes from COVID-19. This article is particularly relevant to

3

ongoing global health challenges, demonstrating the intricate relationship between infectious and
non-communicable diseases. It also adds a timely perspective to my research by addressing the
compounded risks in vulnerable populations.

The third article by Wolf et al. (2021) connects NCDs with oral health, an area often
overlooked in NCD prevention and management. This article broadens the scope of NCD
research by linking oral health to chronic conditions, shedding light on the systemic nature of
these diseases. Oral health serves as both an indicator and a contributor to the progression of
NCDs, and this article underscores the need for integrated healthcare approaches.

Similarly, Pitts et al. (2021) focus on dental caries, framing it as a non-communicable
disease. This unique perspective on dental health as an NCD broadens my research to include
oral health as an essential factor in the NCD discourse. The article also serves as an empirical
study that delves into the physiological and behavioral risk factors associated with dental caries,
offering a nuanced understanding of NCD prevention at the community level.

To examine global patterns of NCD prevalence, I selected Wang & Wang (2020), an
article that uses modeling and prediction techniques to assess global NCD trends. This empirical
study enhances my understanding of the future burden of NCDs and provides valuable datadriven insights. The article uses statistical models to project the global incidence of NCDs and
highlights the importance of predictive analytics in healthcare planning.

Akseer et al. (2020) address NCDs among adolescents, a critical demographic often
neglected in NCD discussions. This article focuses on the unique determinants and policies
needed to address NCDs in younger populations, offering a broader view of how early-life

4

interventions can mitigate long-term health risks. It is an empirical study that adds depth to my
research by focusing on the social determinants of health and adolescence as a critical
intervention period.

Physical inactivity is a well-established risk factor for NCDs, and the article by
Katzmarzyk et al. (2022) examines the burden of NCDs attributable to physical inactivity across
different income levels. This empirical study provides a cross-sectional analysis of how lifestyle
factors, particularly exercise, influence the prevalence of NCDs, making it a valuable
contribution to my research on risk reduction strategies.

The Anderson et al. (2021) article discusses the Global Breast Cancer Initiative,
highlighting the role of strategic collaborations in strengthening healthcare systems to address
NCDs. Focusing on breast cancer, a prevalent NCD, this article emphasizes international
cooperation and offers insights into policy-level interventions. It provides an empirical
framework for understanding large-scale, global health initiatives and their impact on NCD
management.

Ayoka et al. (2022) investigate the role of antioxidants in preventing and treating NCDs.
This article is particularly relevant to my research on biochemical approaches to NCD prevention
and treatment, exploring the potential of antioxidants as therapeutic agents. The empirical nature
of the study provides concrete data on how biochemical interventions can mitigate NCD risk
factors.

Lastly, Coates et al. (2020) look at the burden of NCDs from infectious causes, offering a
fresh perspective on the overlap between communicable and non-communicable diseases. This

5

article employs a modeling approach to understand the dual burden of diseases, making it a
critical addition to my research, as it emphasizes the interconnectedness of global health
challenges.

Conclusion
The ten articles presented here offer a thorough understanding of non-communicable
illnesses, including their incidence, risk factors, and management approaches from many
perspectives. This research provides a comprehensive knowledge of NCDs and their significant
effects on global health by combining empirical data with theoretical viewpoints.
