1. Motivation is the force that strengthens, directs, and sustains an individual’s efforts.
Efforts are those recognizable behaviors of motivation (Bateman & Konopaske 2022).
Managers can use goal setting, reinforcement, and the expectancy theory to motivate
their employees. Goal setting theory argues that people have goals that energize them
and direct their thoughts and behaviors towards a particular end (Locke 1968). Goal
setting requires managers to set work-related goals and is knowledgeable of the
behaviors that they want their employees to exhibit. Reinforcement has four components.
They are positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, punishment, and extinction.
Positive reinforcement area applied and increases the likelihood that a behavior will
reoccur. A negative reinforcement removes an undesirable consequence. Punishments
are applied such as administering an adverse consequence. Extinction occurs when the
manager fails to provide a reinforcing consequence which reduces motivation, and the
behavior is eliminated. Expectancy theory argues that an individual’s performance leads
to some level of performance which leads to one or more outcomes (Vroom 1964).
Expectancy theory helps managers to identify leverage points to motivate their
employees. Managers are better able to increase expectations, identify positive
outcomes, and make performance influential towards positive outcomes (Bateman &
Konopaske 2022). When faced with detractors it is important that managers reignite the
spark and help their employees get back on track. There are several strategies that a
manager can use. They are listening to employees, providing positive and negative
feedback and reconnecting employees to the why. Listening to employees requires
managers to ask your employees what they need and listen. Providing positive and
negative feedback on their work lets them know what they did well and what they need to
improve upon. Managers can also encourage team members to push themselves outside
their comfort zones to develop new skills. Reconnecting employees to the why can be
accomplished by refocusing on the company vision and help them reconnect with the
“why” behind their work and sharing with them why what they do matters (Forbes
Councils Member 2023)

2. What techniques and proven practices can you use when motivating followers?
Hello classmates and Dr. Angello Lamar, welcome to week four of our management
course. This week we are discussing motivation. Motivating employees is one of a
managers most important, and most complex, responsibilities. Different things
motivate different people. Although some things are universally motivating,
managers often fail to apply, and even badly mismanage the most basic motivation
principles. To generate high performance consistency over time is the goal, but the
strategies and tactics managers use vary greatly, sometimes succeeding and
sometimes failing and backfiring( Bateman, T. & Konopaske, R. 2022). Managers
must motivate employees in order to achieve performance. Techniques to motivate
employees could be offering a reward for having highest performance. They must
set goals that motivate. Goal setting theory states that people have conscious goals
that energize them and direct their thoughts and direct behaviors toward a
particular end. Keep in mind the principle that goals motivate , managers set goals
for employees or collaborate with employees to set goals together (Bateman, T. &
Konopaske, R. 2022). Goals are to improve performance, provide meaningful
feedback, set goals that have meaning to your employees, agonize their
accomplishments, give a positive attitude such as laugh, joke, have fun and play
music. Create a comfortable work environment. You have to maintain the level of
motivation. Remind yourself of your successes. Think about goals you have
achieved. Be creative, you sometimes have to renew your motivation, find new ways
to complete your tasks, creativity becomes motivation.
