Pre-simulation Reflections (5 points)

This is a separate reflection assignment,
not part of today’s midterm. These questions are designed to help you explore your own perspectives. There are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers and you do not need to align with any specific viewpoint. Instead,
focus on
how you personally think about these issues and what influences your ideas.

Instructions: Keep the questions in this document and put your answer for each question below the respective questions. Save this document with your answers and submit it in the assignment “Pre-simulation” on Canvas.

1. What does it mean for a company to be ethical? Who decides what counts as ethical?

2. If a company is maximizing profits while harming workers or communities, what legal, economic, social, or cultural forces are actually effective in making them change course?

3. You’re at the grocery store, about to buy something you eat regularly (e.g., lettuce, avocados, milk, protein power). As you reach for it, you remember hearing that workers in the supply chain are protesting for safer working conditions. There’s no clear alternative brand that guarantees better labor practices.

What thoughts go through your mind as you decide whether or not to buy it? What would make this decision easier?

4. Some companies adopt corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs voluntarily, while others only act after facing public pressure. Do you think CSR is about businesses leading social change, responding to external demands, or something else? Why?
