We have examined the arguments of Howard Zinn and de las Casas in class, both individually and as a group. One of the steps we took was to compare modern (Zinn) reflections on the history of the conquest with contemporary accounts of the same (Casas). (The Discussion Board online)

This notion that history exists both then and now is something that pervades the study — and this viewpoint is something that we frequently encounter in other disciplines, as well.

For your first major essay assignment, you will examine “Letter from Birmingham Jail” in a similar light. Establish the historical context, then consider King’s argument in the letter within that context, summarize it, and examine that argument against where we are as a society today.

Identify at least two examples of each type of appeal King makes (pathos, ethos, logos) citing quotes from the letter itself. You will need to research this topic, and that means sources. It means documentation. It means spending some time with the material. Cite specific examples from the text and from your research to back up your claims. (HINT: the letter itself is your first source, but you’ll need a couple more at least.)

Your essay should be no shorter than 1,200 words. Essays that fall short of this will not be graded and will instead
 be assigned a zero.
Also, please remember: this is a formal, academic paper, and it should be written in a formal, academic tone. All papers must be submitted in MLA format with the works cited.
