Peer response – RESPOND TO THIS PEER

K.H. – “There are multiple ways that I envision using the concepts learned in this course in my future nursing practice as a baccalaureate-prepared nurse. I will ensure that I consider the beliefs and cultural values of clients. Showing respect and compassion is essential to build trust and foster a supportive patient care. These principles will allow me to learn about different cultural backgrounds, practices, and values to better understand and meet the needs of the patient. Showing empathy provides patient-centered care that addresses not only their medical needs but also their emotional and cultural concerns.

Program outcome three states the importance of communicating effectively with the patient population and other healthcare providers in managing the healthcare of individuals, families, aggregates, and communities. Being bilingual has also enabled me to better communicate and understand patients from Spanish-speaking cultures. This allows me to share medical information clearly and understand the cultural aspects that influence their health experiences and views. It is important to also be mindful of verbal and nonverbal communication with diverse cultures. This course has taught me the importance of effective communication. It is essential to use resources that help communicate in the client’s preferred language and to respect cultural differences in how people communicate (Chamberlain University, 2025). Nurses should recognize the factors that affect healthcare interactions and address them properly because cultural elements can greatly influence communication, including assessments and nursing care (Chamberlain University, 2025). This course has taught me that following this outcome will improve my communication with both patients and other healthcare providers.

The competency 9.5c from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials states that nurses achieve this competency by demonstrating sensitivity to the values of others. This course has helped me develop verbal and nonverbal communication skills by exposing me to diverse cultures and their practices. It has also helped me connect better with patients from diverse backgrounds by providing assessment strategies that consider their cultural beliefs and preferences. This leads to more effective and respectful communication in healthcare. Being bilingual in English and Spanish, as well as familiar with Hispanic culture, has greatly benefited my nursing career. I have been able to communicate effectively with the Spanish-speaking community regarding their healthcare needs during their hospital stays.”
