Description

Description

This project aims to design and simulate a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) for air pollution monitoring using CupCarbon (an open-source WSN simulator). The network will consist of sensor nodes deployed in different locations, transmitting data to a central sink node. Students will focus on node placement, network connectivity, energy efficiency, and data transmission performance.

Description and Instructions
This project aims to design and simulate a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) for air pollution
monitoring using CupCarbon (an open-source WSN simulator). The network will consist of
sensor nodes deployed in different locations, transmitting data to a central sink node. Students
will focus on node placement, network connectivity, energy efficiency, and data transmission
performance.
Group size:

3-4 members for each group, depending on the size of the CRN.

Project Requirements:
1. Use CupCarbon to create and simulate WSN.
2. Focus on air pollution monitoring in a smart city environment.
3. Optimize the node placement, communication, and energy consumption.
4. Deliverables: final report, and PowerPoint presentation (demo).

How to download/use CupCarbon (Arabic-version):

Project Tasks & Implementation Steps:
1. Step 1: Setting Up the Smart City Environment (1.5 Points)
a. Import a city map into CupCarbon.
b. Identify key pollution-prone areas such as:
i. Industrial zones.
ii. Highways.
iii. Residential areas. Parks.
c.

Include a screenshot of the imported map in CupCarbon with Key Pollution
Zones Highlighted.

2. Step 2: Designing the Wireless Sensor Network (3 Points)
a. Add 10 sensor nodes to monitor air pollution levels as follows:

i. 3 near industrial areas.
ii. 3 near highways.
iii. 2 in residential zones.
iv. 2 in parks.
b. Place 1 sink node to collect data from the sensors.
c.

Configure each node with:
i. Transmission range: 50 meters.
ii. Communication protocol: ZigBee.
iii. Sensing interval: Every 5 minutes.

d. Illustrate sensor node locations and their coverage areas (WSN Node
Placement in CupCarbon).
3. Step 3: Establishing Communication & Running Initial Tests (2 Points)
a. Connect nodes using multi-hop routing to relay data to the sink.
b. Run the initial simulation and check for:
i. Connectivity issues.
ii. Packet loss.
iii. High energy consumption.
c.

Show how data travels from sensors to the sink (WSN Communication Paths &
Data Flow).

4. Step 4: Optimizing the Network for Efficiency (1.5 Points)
a. Rearrange node positions to improve connectivity.
b. Reduce energy consumption by adjusting transmission intervals.
c.

Test different routing strategies to minimize packet loss.

d. Compare the optimized layout with the initial setup (Optimized WSN Layout).
5. Step 5: Analyzing Performance Metrics (3 Points)
a. Fill the following table (use a graph or table to present performance metrics
before & after optimization)

Metric
Packet Delivery
Ratio
Energy
Consumption

6. Step 6: Presentation & Demonstration (3 Points)
a. Each group will:
i. Prepare a 5-minute demo showing your simulation in CupCarbon.
ii. Create a 5-6 slide PowerPoint presentation, including:
1. Project overview & objectives.
2. WSN design and node placement.
3. Simulation results & optimizations.
4. Key findings & recommendations.
5. Present your findings and answer Q&A.
6. Screenshot of CupCarbon Simulation Running (show an
active simulation with data transmission.)
