Discussion 3.5 Face the Future

Instructions:

Step 1: Read the Scenario

The Scenario:A major U.S. city is expanding the use of facial recognition software in its criminal justice system. The software is used to identify suspects in surveillance footage, monitor protests, and track people at airports and public events.

Proponents argue it makes policing more efficient and modern.Critics argue it misidentifies people of color and violates privacy.

The city is taking public feedback before voting on full implementation.

  1. Police Leadership – You want this tool to fight crime and improve public safety.
  2. Civil Rights Advocate – You’re concerned about racial bias and surveillance.
  3. Tech Developer – You believe the tech can improve with the right oversight.
  4. Marginalized Community Member – You’ve experienced over-policing and mistrust of surveillance.

Step 3: Write Your Initial Post

Respond to the following prompts:

  • From your chosen perspective, do you support or oppose the expansion of facial recognition? Why?
  • How does this relate to modernization theory (progress, tech, institutional change)?
