Introduction
To ensure patient welfare, ethical decision-making in healthcare is a complex endeavor
that requires striking a balance between moral, legal, and medical obligations. Healthcare
workers usually have to balance patient autonomy, justice, and privacy in difficult situations,
especially in high-stress settings like public health emergencies (Pells, 2022). Ethics are made
more difficult by the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare decision-making,
which raises questions about accountability, prejudice, and transparency (Meier et al., 2022).
This study intends to investigate ethical decision-making frameworks, the use of technology, and
the difficulties encountered by medical practitioners in guaranteeing responsible and rational
medical decisions ( (Lu et al., 2022); Lynn et al., 2024). Through an analysis of the literature
currently in publication, this research will offer a thorough grasp of how ethical concepts are
implemented in actual healthcare situations.
This study’s research question centers on how medical personnel deal with moral
conundrums, especially in emergencies and when integrating AI-based decision-support tools.
This study may make use of several software programs, including SPSS for statistical analysis
and NVivo for qualitative analysis (Georgieva et al., 2024). These resources will help with
pattern analysis and ethical dilemma identification (Alshawish & Benbenishty, 2023). They will
also concentrate on assessing possible ways to enhance moral decision-making procedures
(Dennis, 2022). This study aims to close the gap between ethical theories and real-world
applications in medical settings by utilizing technological breakthroughs.

3

To ensure that all analyses follow accepted standards for fairness and integrity, ethical
research principles are essential to this investigation. The research will take into account
principles like beneficence and non-maleficence (Borhany et al., 2021). To maintain the
importance of ethical issues in the research process, the list will also contain justice and respect
for autonomy (Tietzova et al., 2024). Additionally, while handling data, especially when
examining ethical decision-making models, transparency and confidentiality shall be upheld
(Cartolovni et al., 2022). As societal and technical advancements continue to shape ethical
quandaries, this study attempts to offer insightful information that will help medical
professionals make morally sound choices.

Overview of the Topic
In the healthcare industry, ethical decision-making entails weighing moral, legal, and
medical commitments against the welfare of the patient. Healthcare workers frequently deal with
difficult decisions that call for striking a balance between patient autonomy, privacy, and justice
in uncertain or stressful situations. This is especially difficult when public health goals, life-ordeath choices, and resource allocation are involved, as in the case of the COVID-19 epidemic.
Additionally, ethical questions about transparency, prejudice, and accountability are brought up
by the growing use of AI-based decision-support technologies in healthcare. Healthcare
professionals must have a thorough understanding of these ethical problems to make responsible,
considerate, and well-informed judgments that meet social and professional norms.
Reasons for Selecting Each Reference
The selection of article by Alshawish & Benbenishty (2023) was based on its insightful
examination of nurses’ worldwide participation in moral decision-making during pandemics.
Being essential to patient care, nurses regularly face moral conundrums, particularly in times of
emergency like the COVID-19 outbreak. This study provides crucial insights into how nurses
and other healthcare professionals deal with difficult ethical dilemmas. It is a valuable resource
for analyzing moral behavior during emergencies since it greatly aids in comprehending the
decision-making procedures of medical personnel under duress.
In their study of moral decision-making in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic,
Borhany et al. (2021) concentrate on how medical professionals strike a balance between
medical ethics and the crisis’s unparalleled obstacles. This paper offers a critical and
contemporary viewpoint on the moral conundrums that medical professionals encounter,
shedding light on how they make decisions when presented with difficult choices and limited

resources. Ìartolovni et al. (2022), on the other hand, provide a scoping analysis of the social,
legal, and ethical ramifications of AI-based medical decision-support systems. This study
emphasizes the significance of addressing ethical issues about privacy, bias, and responsibility as
AI continues to influence healthcare. This will ensure that AI technologies are responsibly
integrated into medical practice, improving patient care while upholding ethical norms.
Dennis’s (2022) article addresses the difficulties nurses encounter while making moral
decisions, especially in high-stress settings like operating rooms. Frequently, as frontline
healthcare professionals, nurses must make quick judgments based on their knowledge, which
has a direct effect on patient outcomes. By highlighting the significance of comprehending their
role in healthcare ethics, this essay clarifies the particular ethical conundrums that nurses face.
An extensive literature evaluation of ethical decision-making models in healthcare services is
given by Georgieva et al. (2024). The paper presents several theoretical frameworks that serve as
a guide for moral decision-making, offering insightful advice on how to use these models in a
range of healthcare contexts to guarantee moral principles are upheld when dealing with
challenging patient care problems.
The articles by Lynn et al. (2024) and Lu et al. (2022) were chosen because they
addressed current ethical issues in the medical field. Lu et al. (2022) highlight contextual and
cultural issues while providing insights into ethical decision-making in the context of caring for
individuals living with HIV/AIDS in China. The convergence of social media and nursing is
examined by Lynn et al. (2024), who also explore ethical concerns surrounding online
interactions. Both studies offer insightful viewpoints on the changing ethical environment in
healthcare, taking into account both technological and global factors.

4

The article by Meier et al. (2022) was selected because it examines the use of AI
algorithms in clinical settings for ethical decision-making, an important topic as AI’s use in
healthcare grows. Responsible usage of AI is ensured by an understanding of its impact on
ethical activities. With core frameworks helpful for comprehending the ethical complexity in the
profession, Pells (2022) offers a crucial overview of ethical decision-making in the healthcare
industry. Tietzova et al. (2024) investigate the moral conundrums that hospital doctors
encountered during the COVID-19 epidemic, providing practical advice on how to make
decisions in emergencies and extending our knowledge of moral behavior in medical contexts.
Summary
In conclusion, the chosen papers offer a wide range of viewpoints on ethical decisionmaking in the medical field, including perspectives from both local and international contexts,
various medical specialties, and the difficulties brought on by both technology and human
elements. Together, these sources will help the research paper understand the intricate and varied
aspects of making moral decisions in the medical field, with an emphasis on how moral choices
are made during emergencies, how artificial intelligence and other technologies are influencing
healthcare ethics and the particular difficulties faced by doctors, nurses, and other medical
professionals. A thorough grasp of the concepts, difficulties, and models entailed in making
ethical decisions in the healthcare industry will be shaped by this extensive investigation.
