Health Information Technology and Nursing Informatics: Introduction

In the video,
Nursing Informatics Innovators,  you are provided an extensive list of 34 nursing informatics innovators. Each of these individuals has been integral in advancing nursing informatics and the field of nursing practice.

Innovators in the field of nursing informatics, led the way in shifting the perception of a nurse as an art of patient care, to the practice of nursing as a science, vested in science, technology, and advancements.

Nursing informatics innovators facilitated and created major advancements in the field of nursing and ensured the field would be one of advancement, continual change, and scientific innovation. Exploring the work of these innovators is essential in understanding where nursing informatics began, where it is now, and where it continues to go.

For this Discussion, reflect on the role of individual nursing informatics innovators and consider their contributions, the impact of their contributions, and what you might specifically learn from them in your nursing practice. Reflect on your background and experiences in nursing informatics. You will also review Table 1 from the American Nurses Association (2015) Scope and Standards of Practice (2nd ed.) Explore on how you might apply the knowledge of these innovators and the information from Table 1 to your nursing practice, your education, and your future goals.

                                   Information Technology and Nursing Informatics

Nursing informatics (NI) employs technology to enhance healthcare delivery, administration, and strategic planning. It encompasses the storage and retrieval of healthcare data to improve patient care. The evolving healthcare environment underscores the significance of nursing informatics due to the increasing integration and utilization of digital health and technology (Peltonen et al., 2019).

I enjoyed collaborating with nursing informatics and the information technology team to educate healthcare providers and patients about the GetWell network. The technology was implemented to assist patients and healthcare professionals enhance engagement, communication, and all-encompassing care. The GetWell network delivers tailored treatment that addresses individual patient requirements through diagnosis, medication management, and discharge planning. Patients are supplied with a remote or can utilize the smartphone app as a resource guide during their hospital stay. GetWell technology-enhanced patient satisfaction scores that contribute to hospital financial profitability and referrals. I have also used Cerner and Epic, electronic health record systems that aim to enhance patient care and safety.

Nursing informatics may augment my competencies by providing information and tools to efficiently organize, analyze, and disseminate relevant data for patient care. Documentation procedures can be refined to guarantee data accuracy and accessibility. I can evaluate data to discern trends, patterns, and outcomes that facilitate decision-making and enhance patient care. Communication among healthcare workers is improved for enhanced care coordination and strengthened professional connections. The growing integration of technology in nursing necessitates that nurses possess proficiency in nursing informatics and an openness to technology within the healthcare setting (Chipps et al., 2022).

This course will strengthen my proficiency by improving my analytical and decision-making skills in clinical settings and my capacity to interpret data from research databases to support the implementation of evidence-based practices that promote superior patient care. Enhanced communication and teamwork among healthcare practitioners can mitigate medical errors and foster personalized treatment. Enhancing nurses’ informatics proficiency, particularly in informatics abilities and clinical decision-making, is essential by creating training programs focused on this technology for nurses (Batran et al., 2022).
