Assignment Instructions

The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord, and the brain is made up of many different anatomical parts that each have a specific role and function in biology and behavior. To explore this system more in-depth, you will identify the function of the different areas of the brain, including neurons and neurotransmitters.

Imagine you are working for a neurological research center, and the staff needs additional reading material for their waiting room. You’ve been asked to create a pamphlet to explain the function of the different parts of the central nervous system.

Create a 700- to 1,050-word pamphlet with pictures and graphics in which you:

  • Describe the function of the different parts of the brain, including:
  • The 4 lobes of the cerebral cortex
  • The different pieces of the limbic system
  • The areas within the midbrain and hindbrain
  • Outline the anatomy and function of a neuron.
  • Explain the role and function of at least 3 neurotransmitters.
  • Describe a “real world” example of an everyday activity, walking your reader through how each of the above systems work together to execute that task (i.e., show how the different areas of the central nervous system function together).

Your pamphlet can take any form you are comfortable using. There are some templates in Word for pamphlets and brochures, you can just use several pages of a Word document as long as you include pictures, you can use a few powerpoint slides as a pamphlet, or you can use another layout software that you are comfortable, as long as you can upload it in a form your instructor can read (i.e. pdf, etc.).

Include pictures and graphics to enhance your pamphlet.

Cite at least 2 to three peer-reviewed references, published in the last three years, to support your assignment; remember to cite and reference all sources you use to compose your work (including non-peer-reviewed ones). But at least two sources must be peer-reviewed and represent your research legwork. The “answer” to this assignment is not as important as demonstrating your critical thinking, in-depth research, and effort at pulling together information from a variety of sources to present your own argument, reflective of your unique analysis. In other words, it is possible to present a “good answer” yet not score well on this assignment because your individual legwork and thoughtwork is not specifically evident. If you have questions, send them my way, I’m happy to help!

Note: Peer reviewed doesn’t just mean “good.” A lot of reputable and good sources of information (including textbooks, published edited books, posts and web articles from sites like Mayo or Cleveland Clinic or the CDC) are out there for you to use – and you can use use them – but they won’t “count” as peer-reviewed articles (which come specifically from peer-reviewed scholarly, academic journals). If you have any questions about this, let me know! I’m willing to help and am only a message away!

Please don’t use AIFormat citations in your pamphlet according to APA guidelines.
