 Directions:

Learning is best achieved by combining study with application. While studying cultural processes through a psychological lens, you may find that some concepts resonate with your own experiences, and that you are interested and eager to find out more about your own culture, as well as a culture that is different than your own. As such, these papers will allow you to discover your own culture further, and learn about a new culture in which you are curious. For this New Culture, you may research & reflect on it (see below), OR you have the option researching the culture WHILE you eat the culture’s unique foods! Either way, your essay should provide an informative overview of both cultures, and must include these components:

  • Your Own Culture! (one page; 100 points) DUE in the middle of the semester
    • First paragraph (60 pts): Using personal and/or online sources (see PRO TIP below), tell me new discoveries about your culture from your investigations. You may also include a short description about how people in your culture practice, appreciate, and pass on their cultural traditions.
    • Second paragraph (40 pts): Your reflections on how these discoveries change/inform how you think about your culture.
  • Reference Page (APA-style): If you draw on any cultural information outside of friends or family members, you must cite your sources, both in-text, and in a References page (see the example paper).

(My topic : history of street fashion in relation to Black American culture)!!!

Key points about the connection between Black culture and street fashion:

Harlem Renaissance Influence:

The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 30s laid the foundation for modern streetwear by promoting a sense of cultural pride through bold fashion choices, setting the stage for future trends.

Hip-Hop Impact:

The rise of hip-hop music in the late 20th century significantly propelled streetwear into the mainstream, with rappers using clothing as a form of self-expression, popularizing items like oversized jeans, hoodies, and sneakers.

Social Commentary:

Baggy clothing, often associated with streetwear, can also be seen as a response to socio-economic disparities within Black communities, where access to fitted clothing might be limited.

Sneaker Culture:

Sneaker collecting and wearing became a major aspect of Black street fashion, with iconic brands like Nike and Jordan playing a vital role.

Designers and Icons:

Black designers like Dapper Dan have heavily influenced streetwear trends, creating unique styles that have later been adopted by high-fashion brands.

Important aspects of Black street fashion:

Bold Colors and Patterns:

Vibrant colors and eye-catching patterns are often used to make a statement.

Layering:

Layering different garments to create a complex look is a common element.

Athleisure:

The integration of athletic wear into casual clothing, reflects the Black community’s emphasis on fitness and active lifestyles.

Hair and Accessories:

Hairstyles and accessories like hats, bandanas, and jewelry are also used as part of the overall street fashion aesthetic.
